Visitors secure stunning bonus-point success at The RAG!

RAMS overcame a slow start to win yet another exhillirating National One contest as they triumphed 47-40 in a 13-try thriller at Richmond.

The visitors made a dreadful start as they lost a line-out in their own 22 ‘Mond going through a couple of phases before scrum-half Luc Jones sniped over from close range.

Alex Burrage’s attempted conversion struck the left upright, but his side moved further in front with a similar score this time dotted down by Luke Spring.

The extras were added for 12-0, but Rams sparked into life with a lovely try from Ellis Jones, the centre breaking through a tackle before showing a neat turn of foot to go under the posts.

There was no mistake from Fraser Honey, and the fly-half repeated the trick to put the visitors in front after a trademark Axel Kalling-Smith surge enabled Charlie Robson to cross the whitewash for a half-time lead.

It was Rams who took first blood in the second period, Kalling-Smith again the creator with another glorious charge, and while he was well tackled just short, replacement Ant Marris made an instant impact by burrowing over from a metre out.

Honey’s kick made it 21-12, but in what would go on to be a recurring story, Richmond replied swiftly as Jones doubled his tally in a similar fashion to his first.

The conversion reduced the deficit to two points, but the visitors – who were playing with real depth in attack – sealed their bonus-point when Henry Bird cut a glorious line to scythe through for another converted effort.

Yet the away side were struggling to stop their opponents’ pick-and-go game near the line, Ntinga Mpiko grabbing Richmond’s fourth before Burrage landed his kick.

However, Rams pulled away again as Robson collected his second after some super work from George Makepeace-Cubitt, Honey on target to put his side 35-26 in front.

Richmond rallied again, though, and camped on the Rams’ five-metre line before both Dan Swain and Marris was sin-binned.

Tom Hitchcock wriggled over on the left before a stunning Burrage conversion arguably made his side favourites despite their narrow deficit.

Rams hit back, however, kicking to the corner and earning a penalty try when a powerful maul was illegally brought down.

Unbelievably the hosts went straight down the other end, Will Kaye collecting a chip to dive over on the right, Burrage landing another pearler with less than a minute to play.

However, Rams finally put the game to bed with the final play, Max Hayman riding a maul over to set the seal on an incredible afternoon at The RAG.
