Difficult conditions in the rain resulted in both sides playing far from their best, but it was the ex-National 1 side that finished up on top, courtesy of an intercept try from their winger, A Ricci, midway through the first half and a turnover from the line-out at the start of the second half which granted the home team an 18-3 lead.
Rams pack responded with their, now, trademark scrum dominance, but a dogged rear guard defence denied the men from Reading until the final few minutes when referee, Timothy Allatt, was left no choice but to grant the Rams a penalty try after multiple transgressions from the home team.
Rams CEO Gary Reynolds was upbeat despite his team’s first loss of the season “we have a great set-up and a fantastic squad that is brimming with potential and we haven’t become a bad side overnight.” He added “we know what went wrong and we will put it right to Saturday.
Reynolds also paid tribute to the home team saying “Old Albanian are a lively side that usually plays open rugby and they cleverly changed their game plan at the weekend and that, along with our errors, cost us the match”.
This Saturday Rams host promotion chasing Bury St Edmunds for another top of the table clash, kicking off at 2.30pm, at Old Bath Road.
