The Rams enjoyed a steady stream of tries throughout the afternoon, but they fell just short of the 50-point mark with the game finishing 48-14.
Rams head coach Seb Reynolds was delighted with the win as he said after the game, “Barnes are such a dangerous team, putting 50 points past Taunton earlier in the season, so to win in the manner we did, I’m really chuffed with the performance today. Our plan was to really take them on up front early in the game and to stifle their attack and I think we did that well. We had one moment in the first half where we switched off and they scored, special mention to their winger Robbie Martey, he’s electric."
Both sides appeared fairly evenly matched over the opening exchanges, until Barnes received a yellow card, allowing the Rams to capitalise on their extra man and score through Taylor. Rams took further advantage of playing against 14 men soon after this, as Seers found a gap in the Barnes defence and exploited it, passing the ball off to Corrigan who darted his way through number of Barnes challenges to score under the posts.
Barnes reacted well to going two tries down as they played the ball out wide to Martey, having just returned from the sin bin, and he scored in the corner to cut the Rams lead in half. Nonetheless, it was the men from Reading who had the last score of the half as they drove to the line following a penalty line out, and a Seers conversion restored their 14 point lead and signaled the half time whistle.
The second half began in similar fashion to the first, with both sides in stalemate, but the Rams quickly got going through the creativity of Seers as he kicked to the corner, where Andrew Humberstone gathered in acres of space and scored under the posts.
From this point the Rams continued to storm forward mercilessly adding a further three tries to their tally before Barnes were able to reply with one of their own. However, the home side saved the best till last as Rossiter made a claim for the try of the season, weaving his way through almost the entirety of the Barnes back line to score just right of the posts to secure victory as the Rams marched on in National 2 South.
Rams are on the road next week as they travel to Guernsey to take on the league newcomers in a return fixture. Coincidentally Rams beat Guernsey at home on 13th October 2018 with the same scoreline as the Barnes fixture, 48-14. We look forward to seeing all the travelling supporters in Guernsey.
