The Rams secured their bonus point before the break allowing them to ease off slightly in the second half, as the away side finished strongly.
Rams head coach, Seb Reynolds, was measured in his post match comments as he said, “It was a very good performance today and I was pleased with the platform we laid in the first half. Old Reds are a really good side who have had some good results recently, so we really had to look at where their strengths lie and take them away.”
It looked to be a dream start for the Rams as Vooght took the ball over the line after just 8 minutes on his 100th appearance in National league games for the club, but it was not to be as the referee disallowed it due to a forward pass.
Rams kept up the pressure following this setback, but once again their progress was halted as the Old Redcliffians held up the ball over the try line. Finally the Rams broke through after 16 minutes as they drove to the line following a penalty scrum five yards out and were awarded a well-deserved penalty try. From this point the Rams kicked on scoring three more tries within ten minutes before the break, to secure a bonus point.
The pick of these tries came after 36 minutes as Jones took the ball over the line in the corner following some slick hands from Lloyd and Andrew Humberstone.
The Rams came out in lively fashion in the second half securing yet another try through Duffelen as he ran the length of the pitch to score under the posts having intercepted a looping pass. The away side reacted well as they advanced steadily and Henry Bird eventually found a gap, which he exploited with his electric pace and scored, adding further to his lead as top try scorer in this National League.
Old Redcliffians capitalised further on this momentum swing with two more tries, helped by their extra man, as the Ram’s Connor Stapley received a yellow card as the game entered its final ten minutes.
With the men from Bristol pushing for a fourth try and a bonus point the Rams defended stoutly to see out the game and put an end to what would have been a remarkable comeback.
Rams enjoy a week off this Saturday with their next game scheduled for Saturday 2nd March away to Ding's Crusaders, Bristol.
