Rams scrum half James Brooks conversion of replacement front-row man Tomas Owen's 54th minute try, his second of the season, finally proved the difference between the teams at Weedon Lane last Saturday where the home side battled to the very final whistle

They even snatched a 63rd minute try themselves, from left-wing Tim Lloyd, leaving replacement kicker Matt Gilbert with a nerve-tingling wide angle conversion which, fortunately for Rams, sailed past the posts.
And, just minutes later, there was more bad news for them as they lost replacement No.8 Gareth Wehrle when he was caught up at the bottom of a ruck and broke his ankle making it necessary for referee Simon Walker to switch the game to another pitch while they waited for an ambulance to arrive.
And, for the final 15 minutes, Rams dominated their irascible opponents with Brooks, finally, kicking deliberately in to touch to end the match.
The win stretched third placed Rams unbeaten National League 3 South West run to seven games putting them five points ahead of fourth placed Old Redcliffians. However, the gap between Rams and second placed county rivals Bracknell stretched out to two points as the Lilly Hill men grabbed a bonus point in their, 29-10, defeat of visitors Old Redcliffians.
While it was close vice-skipper Andy Amor, leading the side in the absence of injured regular Owen Root, said it was a good result particularly considering the last minute changes to the line-up.
“It was a hard-fought win,” he admitted frankly. “We had lot of disruption on Friday night and Saturday morning with sickness and injuries and a lot of people changing positions so it really showed the character of the team and I was really pleased with the effort and the character of the boys in that last 13 minutes where we really dominated.
“It's also a credit to the club and a credit to the 2nd team as well when we know we can call on people to step up and deliver at 1st team level like they did.”
Amor, himself, showed, once again, his versatility by switching to the back-row when Azza Hopkins pulled out because of sickness.
This meant that `AJ' Hopkins filled his captain's place in the centre allowing the departing Joe Duffelen an unexpected run on the wing while Andries Steenkamp was a late addition to the replacements bench.
From the kick-off it was clear that Rams were going to test out the home defence immediately with Brooks hoisting a huge up-and-under which the home side, to their credit, dealt with admirably.
And, it was in fact, Amersham who had the opening chance of points, after just two minutes, when Duffellen was caught offside at a ruck, only for scrum half Craig Burgess to put his attempt wide.
And, just four minutes later, the roles were reversed but with the same outcome as Brooks 45 metre effort, when an Amersham player went over the top of a ruck, also went to the left of the uprights.
Rams then lost wing Sean McDermotroe to a torn hamstring to be replaced by Jack Hill while a yellow card for Ollie Poole, also at a ruck, didn't help matters for them but, fortunately, Burgess, this time, fell short with his 38 metre attempt at goal.
And, with no further changes going either sides way up to the break, it was Rams who kicked off the second-half with the teams all-square at 0-0.
Again it was the home team that had the first chance of points when Rams were caught playing the ball offside but, yet again, replacement kicker Matt Gilbert saw his 33 metre kick go wide.
The stalemate was finally broken, however, by the visitors, on 54 minutes, when, having enjoyed the best of the possession for sometime they were awarded a penalty when Amersham collapsed a scrum and Brooks put his kick into the home 22.
From the line-out the player of the match by a country mile, Rams No.8 Tom Bryson, took clean ball and sent grafting prop James Baker on a penetrating drive at the home defence and with Owen up in support to take it on and drive over the line with players on his back and for Brooks to convert with ease.
As Welshman Owen, who's studying for a Law Degree at Reading University, said afterwards with a grin: “Baker made a classic run and I just couldn't stop it there! But it was a good game in fairness. They gave as good as they got but, I think, we had the dog inside us to keep going. It was real hard up front and we had a lot respect for them and, in the last few minutes, we really showed our determination and we had too because, I thought, they would have clinched it in the end, but they didn't!”
As much as Baker made the Owen try it was his missed tackle on left-wing Lloyd that helped him bamboozle the Rams defence, just nine minutes later, for their unconverted try,
However, within minutes, the game had been stopped due to the Wehrle injury and when it restarted on Amersham's second pitch Rams never looked like conceding another try and saw out the half camped in the Amersham half.
As new skipper Amor admitted it was another big step along the promotion pathway in the lead up until Christmas.
“We had a conversation four weeks ago about the run-up to Christmas and that started with Weston-super-Mare last week,” he says.” We took five points there and we've taken four points today and this is a difficult place to come to. We've Avonmouth Old Boys next week at home where we'll expect five more points and then our last game of 2013 will be Bracknell away, and, if we can win that, it'll put us in good shape for the New Year.”
Rams - Bryans; Duffelen, Bryant, `AJ' Hopkins, McDermotrode; Gumbleton, Brooks; Weller, Paxton, Baker; Jeffreys, Kenneally; Poole, Amor, Bryson. Reps – Owen, Hill, Steenkamp.
