Rams move up to third after tense struggle

A couple of magic moments from Joe Duffelen, including a 75-metre try, sparked a 24-20 bonus point win over 14-man Old Patesians.
Although Rams move up to third place in National 3 South West, the game showed no club in this league can be taken lightly.
The Sonning men, 12-3 up at the break, twice trailed in the second half but tremendous work from Duffelen put them back in the lead.
He had to switch from centre to full-back in the opening minutes when Rams lost young winger Josh Sunley in a dubious tackle unpunished by the referee.
Duffelen admitted: “I like playing in the No 15 shirt. It gives me the chance to come into the line or from deep. Although our build-up play was good we just couldn’t finish.”
Rams coach Mike Tewkesbury agreed: “Our set piece was very sound but we made too many handling errors. We became impatient instead of recycling.”
Fiesty Old Pats, fourth from bottom in N3SW, lost back row man Josh Stevens after 10 minutes to a yellow card before Rams went ahead. Pressure produced a four-man overlap for centre Dave Massey to exploit.
Then with Rams back row men Azza Hopkins and Jamie Guttridge on the ground injured, Pats attacked and forced a penalty converted by Leo Fielding.
Immediately Rams hit back when sharp interplay between backs and forwards to set up a try for Azza Hopkins improved by James Brooks.
The first half was one-way traffic and the anticipated second half avalanche of points never materialised.
By the seventh minute of the second-half, the Cheltenham visitors were 13-12 up. Full-back Fielding landed a penalty via the upright before converting a 60-metre interception try by winger Dan Burrows after a Rams attack broke down.
Then on 53 minutes Duffelen produced a spell-binding run from a loose Patesian kick. He beat man after man, selling more dummies than Mothercare, before plunging over.
Despite losing Stevens to a second yellow card which became a red, Rams failed to capitalise against gritty opposition.
Pats regained the lead after patient build-up through a second Burrows try to which Fielding added the extras.
Rams breathed a sigh of relief when Fielding missed a kickable penalty and it was left to Duffelen, with a devastating 40-metre break, to set up the territory for the vital touchdown.
After several passages of play, replacement Gus Davies forced his way for a vital score converted by Brooks.
In a pulsating finale to a bruising encounter, the Rams pack, deep into injury time, managed to defend successfully two five-metre line outs to claim the spoils.
Rams: Mann; Sunley, Duffelen, Massey, Foxley; Brooks, Clark; Steadman, Henderson, Baker, Bryson, Hughes, Amor, Hopkins, Guttridge. Reps: Weller, Davies, Flower.
