MATCH REPORT: COLTS SHOW CLASS IN NINE-TRY WIMBLEDON WIN

Bottomley leads the way as Under 18s turn on the style!

NINE different players crossed the whitewash as Rams Colts turned on the style in a 55-5 home win against Wimbledon.

The hosts started brightly and took an early lead as a gorgeous break from Finlay Wells set-up Luke Thorpe to open the scoring.

A second try followed soon after as the forwards bashed away at the Dons’ line, Obi Nwachuku eventually powering over before Jordan Navetta added the extras.

With the game played across four quarters, Rams led 12-0 at the end of the first stanza but quickly extended their lead when scrum-half Elliott Jones took a quick tap-and-go from around 10 metres out, somehow darting his way past numerous would-be defenders to stretch over the line.

Navetta landed a fine kick, and things got better for the hosts as Ben Parsons was the next to touch down, also wide on the left.

No. 8 George Bottomley had been causing havoc all round the park with his strong carrying, and the Abingdon School man grabbed a deserved try from close range before another successful conversion made it 31-0.

Wimbledon continued to battle, however, and they got themselves on the scoreboard just before the end of the second quarter, Rams failing to deal with the kick-off before their opponents took advantage.

It was the home side who had the better of the third period, though, turning on the style for their sixth try as some free-flowing continuity play ended with another of the side’s impressive back rows, Henry Cook, adding a score to his recent hat-trick for the Extra As.

The conversion was again good, and there was nearly a spectacular score for Josh Gouws – the wing grabbing an intercept at the second attempt before sprinting 60 metres to the corner, only to drop it over the line.

However, the excellent Navetta – playing fly-half rather than his usual back three role – collected his side’s seventh try before another Wells capped an eye-catching display with a converted score which took his side to a half-century.

And there was still time for Gouws to amend his previous blip, the wing touching down to round out another impressive display from the Colts.

They head to Bracknell tomorrow (1.30pm) as they look to maintain their OBB Division One title hopes, while the Extra As visit Newbury in Division Two (12.30pm).
