Windsor 41 - Redingensians 7

On a clear sunny morning in Windsor, the royalists amongst the parents where somewhat disappointed to notice that her majesty was not in residence to witness the game.
She missed out on the pre-game entertainment provided by the touch judge Sean McGillvery.Upon being handed a bib to run the line he then proceeded to give his best Mario Balotelli impersonation by trying to put it on.It was then pointed out to him it was given as a flag to wave whilst running the line.
So to the game with both sides only having 17 players each, injuries where not an option & indeed a few players turned up & played whilst already carrying injuries.
The kick-off was well taken by Max Clark and was engulfed by the whole Windsor pack, Ensians then gave away a penalty for hands in the ruck.A quick penalty by Windsor was then advanced 10 metres for not being 10 metres back(this was to happen a few times). From the resulting penalty the ball was kept by the formidable in size Windsor forwards & after 2 rumbles they got a try.The conversion was missed.Score Windsor 5 -0 Ensians.
From the resulting kick-off the ball was lost in the ruck & there winger broke around the blind side to run in the try, despite the best efforts of Zack Pearce who chased from his opposite wing in vain to make the tackle. With the conversion made the score was Windsor 12-0 Ensians.
The next time Ensians had the ball it went through the hands of the backs to Zack on the wing, his run was stopped just short of the line & Windsor were penalised for being off-side at the ruck.A quick tap taken by Alex Crocker fed to Callum Large whose straight hard running gained many yards. The ball was recycled quickly by the forwards the ball was then fed from Crocker to Guy Rawsthorne to Ben Espley then onto Daniel Barber .His straight run between the 2 opposing centres enabled him to touch down for the try near to the posts. The conversion was made by Guy score Windsor 12-7 Ensians.
Form the kick-off Windsor recycled the ball through a few phases & ended up with a 5 metre scrum. There No.8 picked up from the base & rumbled over for the try,the conversion was missed.
Score Windsor 17-7 Ensians.
For the next few minutes a pattern was beginning to emerge where by there bigger forwards were making ground.
Windsor the scored 2 tries from rucks where one there forwards picked up.went blind & then scored,Both conversions were missed so the Haft-time score was.
Windsor 29-7 Ensians.
The 2nd half started with Luke Goodward replacing Michael Hutterli in the 2nd row.
The Ensians forwards then took the game to Windsor, the ball was being secured at the rucks & was being retrieved by the use of the boot rather than the hands which had resulted in a few penalties. From a resulting scrum Crocker tried to clear his lines & was unlucky to have his kick charged down, which resulted in a try.The conversion was made.Score Windsor 36-7 Ensians.
From the line-out Luke secured the ball which was fed along the back line to Ryan Spong who was tacled just short of the line, the ball was re-cycled & as the ball was fed back along the backs a Windsor player intercepted & looked certain to score. He hadn’t bargained for Zack making up 12 metres on him and tackling him into touch.
As the game went on the Ensians dominance in the scrum was beginning to show.As there was flights from Heathrow passing over it was the Windsor props who were having the flying lessons provided by the front row of Jason McGillivary,Ben House & Conor Boyd.Technique over size winning that battle.Helped by the rest of the pack Callum Large,Michael Hutterli,Luke Goodward,Ross Green,Max Clark & Daniel Veitch.
The game was slightly turning in favour of Ensians & with a bit more composure with the handling a few more tries could have been scored.
The last score however went to Windsor when they again rumbled over from a line-out.The conversion was missed so the final score was Windsor 41-7 Ensians.
A mention should be made of Philip Stubbs who played at full back for the first time & was kept busy chasing there kicks & even managed to clear one with his left foot.
The game was played in a great spirit by BOTH SIDES & they were a credit to there respective clubs. All that was left was for Steve to treat the walking wounded.Well done to all the boys for their effort and commitment shown to day.
For the first time the boys were involved in a “BOAT RACE”(the first of many many more to come) in the drink off.
The forward of the day was: Ross Green.
The back of the day was: Ben Espley.
Man of the Match was : Ben House.
Unfortunately in the drink off technique didn’t overcome size on this occasion.
The beer for the parents in the sunshine tasted good & we would have raised a glass to Her Majesty if she had been home.
