Reading Tournament

A fixture with a difference this weekend, a tournament harking back to the halcyon days of Minis rugby. A last minute drop out of Reading Abbey put just 5 teams in the A team pool and games were one way affairs of 15 minutes each. Perhaps Abbey were onto something as the remaining teams were all quality strong sides, and we are still nursing some injuries so definitely not at full strength.

Never one to shy away though the boys went at it with spirit. Maidenhead in the opener looked quite even for the first 5 minutes but they kept up the pressure and went ahead, quick as a flash the whistle blew and that was that, no score for us. 2 more games against Trojans & Oxford saw us start to put some pressure together, getting across the line for some points in both was encouraging, but not quite enough to counter their efforts and it was a further 2 losses standing us at played 3 lost 3! A long wait for the final game against Chinnor which in essence was the wooden spoon playoff, Chinnor also having not yet had a win. It was a well played final match from both sides but finally we were able to look like a rugby team again, with the boys refusing to go home without something for their efforts. And a win it was at the whistle so well done boys for that.

So a tough day but decent strong teams, none of the matches were walkovers and heads can be held high. We finished the day played four, lost 3 and won 1. Looking back to last year's results we had actually lost to Chinnor by narrow margin in a friendly fixture with them , so just to beat them today with a mixed squad is still cause for optimism and shows there is still plenty of quality in our side. Well done boys for sticking at it.
