Evelyn Daniels also scored 10 tries in a match back in 1978!

IT is almost nine months since fly-half Alex Seers contributed five conversions in Rams’ stunning 40-38 victory at Cinderford – the last competitive action before the coronavirus pandemic took hold of the country.

Conor Corrigan also bagged a brace on March 14, with the visitors’ other tries coming from Drew Humberstone, Jack Steadman, Tom Vooght and Connor Hayhow.

Alex’s efforts that day took his personal points tally to 250 (two tries, 99 conversions and 14 penalties) during two highly successful seasons at the club – the title-winning National Two South effort in his debut campaign and the runners-up slot last term.

And while he is currently recuperating from injury, Alex speaks very fondly of his time at the club to date.

He said: “I’ve really enjoyed coming down and playing – it’s a great group of guys and a great club.

“One of the reason I joined was the atmosphere resonated with one of my old clubs with the real family ethos and people coming through the minis and juniors. It’s superb.”

Looking back on Rams’ stunning debut campaign in the third tier of English rugby, he continued: “Coming into the league it was a bit like ‘how are we going to do, how are we going to fit in’ and it was only in the first five or six games that we learnt we could really compete.

“That was a big eye-opener for everyone and made us believe we could push on.”

He continued: “The Chinnor game here when we won (27-21 with Henry Bird scoring with the last play) – given the signings they’d made and the squad they had – was a big moment, but actually the Cambridge game in the first one of the year was the most important.

“We’d had a good pre-season, but we didn’t fully know what to expect in National One, so going to Cambridge , who were a really good side and had arguably one of the best backlines we came up against, and score 36 points and get a win at their place was a really, really good to what was a really great year.”

*ALSO worthy of mention from further back in time is Evelyn Daniels, who claimed the club record number of tries in a game with a ‘perfect 10’ for the A side against Esso’s third string.

His amazing effort in September 1978, which led his side to a resounding 76-4 triumph, included an astonishing eight in the first half.
