NATIONAL ONE ROUND-UP - WEEK 20

NATIONAL ONE ROUND-UP - WEEK 20

Rich Ashton26 Feb 2023 - 17:30

Cambridge, Sale, Stortford, DMP, Esher and Taunton do the job!

MATT Hema’s hat-trick inspired second-placed Cambridge to score 43 unanswered points against Rosslyn Park, the hosts over-turning a 21-7 deficit to run out 50-28 bonus-point winners at Volac Park.

Steff James converted Seb Brownhill’s 10th-minute try to put the Blood & Sand in front, but Park hit back with Craig Holland adding the extras to five-pointers from Sam Garvey, Arthur Ellis and Max Trimble in a stunning seven-minute salvo towards the middle of the first half.

However, Cambridge rallied and Hema’s 11-minute treble, two added to by James, gave his side a 26-21 half-time lead.

Further tries from Kwaku Asiedu, Kieran Duffin and two from Joe Green had the hosts 50-21 up heading into injury-time, James with another pair of conversions, before Jake Buckingham’s late try – added to by Holland – earned his side a losing bonus.

Five-try Sale eased to a 27-17 home victory against Chinnor.

Tom Walsh gave the third-placed Dogs an early lead, but the visitors fought back as Tom Price kicked a penalty and then converted Mark Darlington’s try.

Dan Birchall and Fergus Mulchrone touched down for Sale to make it 15-10 at the break, and after James Robins added the extras to an Ollie Longmore effort, a Nev Edwards score with six minutes remaining made the game safe before Price converted a consolation Luke Carter try.

Bishop’s Stortford climbed to fifth after their fast start inspired a 24-12 success at Plymouth Albion.

Matt Riddington was on target following Francis Moore’s try and when Chris Bolton also went over, it was 12-0 inside six minutes.

The Moore-Riddington double-act extended the lead before Plymouth got on the board through Phil Jones.

Tom Putt landed the kick after Dan Collier touched down on the stroke of half-time for Albion, but they went scoreless in the second period and a Will Roberts try wrapped up the bonus-point for Bishop’s.

Darlington Mowden Park held off a brave Leeds Tykes fightback to boost their survival hopes with a hard-fought 27-25 away win.

Charlie Venables gave the hosts an early lead with a penalty, and after Carl Guest crossed for DMP, he added the extras to a Harry Jukes try for 10-5.

Max Davies levelled matters before Venables and Matt Minogue exchanged three-pointers to leave the sides locked 13-13 at half-time.

It was Mowden Park who came out faster, though, Ben Frankland and Callum Mackenzie with a quick-fire converted double to leave their side 14 points clear.

Jukes grabbed a second, Venables on target, before Grayson Maguire went over with 14 minutes remaining, only for Darlington to hold on for a crucial triumph.

Esher produced an astonishing comeback to seal a stunning 47-35 win at Cinderford.

The home side struck early as Mike Wilcox converted Harry Hone’s effort, only for the Eees to hit back through Luke Pearce and Adam Bullett, Sam Morley adding the extras to the latter.

Cinderford went back in front through two converted George Boulton tries before Morley grabbed one of his own for 21-19.

Hone’s second on the stroke of half-time, added to by Wilcox, gave the hosts a nine-point lead at the break, but Morley converted after Bullett doubled up early in the second period.

Mikey Austin came on and landed his kick after touching down to put the Foresters 35-26 in front and seemingly in command, but those were Cinderford’s final points of the afternoon.

Harvey Scott began the comeback on 53 minutes, the league’s top points-scorer Morley adding to his tally, and the fly-half did the same after Dan Rowland and Matt Lowes crossed the whitewash to give his side a vital win in their battle to beat the drop.

On a good day for the sides near the relegation zone, Taunton Titans made it three wins in four with a resounding 73-18 home triumph against bottom side Hull.

Reece Dean landed an early three-pointer for the visitors, but Titans took control as Charlie Wright, Jordan Petherbridge, Isaac Dalton and Immanuel Feyi-Waboso all touched down to have the try bonus-point sealed early in the second quarter.

George Worboys converted three of those for 26-3, but Hull collected a five-pointer through Mike Jobling.

Wright’s second, added to by Worboys, got Taunton going again before Latu Makaafi scored Hull’s second to make it 33-13 at the interval.

Flanker Wright completed his hat-trick on 50 minutes, and the points kept flowing as Worboys converted his own five-pointer along with a trio from Connor Banks, George Gosling and Shai Bonnick.

Hull kept going, and Jack Edwards got their third before the hosts rounded out their highest National One score when Worboys took his tally for the afternoon to 28 points with his second converted try.

Rams, meanwhile, recorded a seventh consecutive bonus-point win with a hard-fought 24-21 success at Birmingham Moseley.
