ON THIS DAY - DECEMBER 15

Rich Ashton15 Dec 2020 - 08:15

Grim win in Birmingham (2018), Barnstaple beaten (2012), derby defeat (2007), cup win (1985) and much more!

On this day in history in…

1934 – A Stephens try was merely a consolation as ORs were thrashed 35-5 at home to Old Berkhamstedians.

1951 – Eric Martin bagged a brace and T Easby, Stamp and Wiggins also crossed the whitewash in a 26-8 home success against Old Mitchamians, Mike Salmon slotting four conversions and a penalty to complete the scoring.

1962 – Barry Greenwood dotted down and Rodney Huggins landed a penalty, but Old Redingensians went down 20-6 at home to Chiltern.

1973 – Gensians were denied victory by two late converted tries which gave Trojans A a 21-12 victory in a friendly at Old Bath Road.

The Sonning men trailed 8-6 at the break, their points coming from a short penalty move started and finished by Martin Salome.

Simon Greenwood converted and also added the extras to a try from Chris Champion.

But the boys in blue suffered twice through sloppiness in the backs and handed victory to the visitors.

1979 – On Chinnor’s windswept, muddy, sloping pitch, Redingensians, without six first-teamers, produced a workmanlike performance to edge home 7-4.

A Chris Vaal try and Mark Simmons gave them the verdict after playing the last half hour without injured Steve Brown.

1984 – A Dickie Porter double and further tries from Graham Tibbett, Pete Coombs, and Steve Hunt, the latter also slotting a quartet of conversions and a penalty, guided Gensians to a 31-10 success at Chinnor.

1985 – Two penalty tries and further scores from Graham Tibbett and Martin Radford laid the platform for a convincing 31-0 Berkshire Cup triumph at Old Stonehamians.

Steve Hunt added 15 points with the boot, made up of three conversions and three penalties.

1990 – Redingensians’ run of bad luck continued with a 10-0 reverse by Fullerians at Watford.

Already missing Stuart Loudwell, they suffered the loss of Dave Snell and finished with 14 men, albeit the hosts did as well after they had a prop sent off for aiming a punch at Steve Hunt.

2007 – James Baker and Gus Davies scored tries, but despite five points from the boot of Wright, Rams went down 20-15 in their derby at home to Reading.

2012 – A power-packed forwards performance saw James Baker and Chris Rowland dot down, and a penalty try secured, while wing Will Rasbridge also went over in a 24-7 home success against Barnstaple, Guy Swadling adding a pair of conversions.

2018 – Ross Crame bagged a brace and Jamar Richardson, Alex Seers, Ben Henderson, Conor Corrigan, Greg Illingworth and Robbie Stapley also went over during a 53-0 win on a grim day at Birmingham & Solihull.

The remaining scores came from a penalty try and three Seers’ conversions.
