RELIVING LAST SEASON: OCTOBER

Rich Ashton25 Jul 2023 - 11:30

Cambridge and Park wins highlight stunning month!

WITH the return of National One rugby less than six weeks away we take a month-by-month look back at Rams’ best-ever campaign last season!

Rams continued their fabulous start to the season with a 40-15 home success against 14-man Darlington Mowden Park to kick off October.

It was the visitors who hit the front with an Ollie Walker try, but Rams hit back as Ollie Cole went over before a Connor Hayhow double, Alex Seers with two conversions for a 19-5 half-time lead.

DMP had also lost prop Josh Crickmay to a 26th-minute red card for a dangerous tackle, and things got worse for them after the break as Seers added to Jak Rossiter and Vince Everitt five-pointers for 33-5.

An Ali Ledingham effort cut the gap, but Hayhow completed his hat-trick shortly before the end to leave Connor Fitzsimons’ last-gasp try merely a consolation.

Rams repelled a ferocious late Cambridge fightback to take their unbeaten record with a 29-26 home win in Week Six.

James McRae’s brilliant early try was converted by Seers, but the Blood & Sand levelled as ex-Ram Steffan James added the extras following a Joe Tarrant score.

Tries from Josh Collis and Seers, along with a conversion, made it 19-7 at half-time, and after the latter converted a Robbie Stapley score and kicked a penalty, the hosts had a 22-point advantage.

Yet there was still plenty of time for a twist in the tale, Kwaku Asiedu with a quick-fire double before a penalty try made it 29-26 with 12 minutes to go – only for Rams to heroically hold out for victory.

A week later Rosslyn Park also lost their unbeaten record to Seb Reynolds’ men as a sublime performance ensured a 29-21 success at The Rock.

Things started dreadfully for the visitors as Park went ahead with a second-minute penalty try, but from there Rams put on a show.

Jak Rossiter grabbed the first try before a brilliant Seers conversion following Charlie Robson’s touchline effort on the left made it 12-7.

An incredible 50-minute McRae try early in the second half was added to by Seers, and after he also landed a penalty, another conversion following Drew Humberstone’s try had the Berkshire boys 29-7 in front.

Rosslyn Park battled valiantly and Jake Buckingham bustled over from close range for two late converted tries, but Rams were now seven from seven – all with bonus-points.

And the streak continued at the end of the month, Birmingham Moseley leaving Old Bath Road with a 50-25 defeat in another cracking spectacle for supporters.

In front of a bumper crowd of 927, it was the Midlanders who made the early breakthrough when Sam McNulty went over at the back of a maul.

Seers nudged over after a Henry Bird try swiftly afterwards, but Mose were back in front 12-7 inside nine minutes when Elliott Creed crossed the whitewash, Ollie Allsopp with the conversion.

However, Jak Rossiter got the hosts back in front, Seers doing the job for 14-12 before Allsopp got his side back in front with a penalty.

Ollie Taylor and Ross Crame tries sealed the bonus point just after the half-four mark, though, Seers with two more points, meaning another Allsopp penalty only reduced the deficit to 26-18 at the break.

Ant Marris was next to go over for Rams in the 45th minute, Rossiter and Bird also doubling their tallies as Ellis Jones also dotted down, a couple more conversions making it 50-28 before Jide Ajayi grabbed a late consolation for Birmingham, Allsopp’s boot providing the final points of the afternoon.
