WITH the return of National One rugby less than six weeks away we take a month-by-month look back at Rams’ best-ever campaign last season!
A dominant display from the Rams’ pack – and in particular the scrum – set up a ninth straight National One bonus-point win as the visitors conquered Leeds Tykes 36-10.
Early tries from Drew Humberstone and Max Hayman, the latter added to by Alex Seers, gave Rams the lead before Seramaia Turagabeci got Tykes on the scoresheet.
A second Hayman effort just before the break gave the away side a 17-5 interval lead, before tries from Ellis Jones and James McRae, converted by Humberstone and Michael Dykes, put the game to bed.
Turagabeci’s second cut the deficit, but Rams had the final word as Charlie Robson touched down.
A final-quarter rally helped Rams make it a perfect 10 wins from 10 as they overcame a battling Plymouth Albion outfit 26-14 at Old Bath Road.
Humberstone converted a 12th-minute Jak Rossiter effort to put the hosts in front, but the Devon men were level by the break as Tom Putt landed the kick after Ramaz Rukhadze dotted down.
The stand-off was again on target after Jack Oulton crossed, but tries from Max Hayman, Ollie Moffitt and Jones got the hosts over the line, replacement Tim Townsend collecting his maiden first-team points with a couple of conversions.
Rams set a club record 11th win to start a season with a hard-fought 27-24 success at Taunton Titans.
Axel Kalling-Smith gave them the lead in a barely credible 22 seconds, but their opponents hit back with Charlie Wright and Isaac Dalton going over from close range, a Jordan Gott conversion making it 12-5.
However, Dykes finished a brilliant counter-attack with the final play of the first half, Townsend on target for a level game.
A wonderful second from Dykes pushed the visitors in front, but Titans struck back with Dalton and Gott adding seven points for 19-17.
Rams, though, knuckled down in wet conditions, Hayman and McRae riding over at the back of a couple of quickfire mauls.
And while Sam Knott ensured Taunton collected two bonus-points with a late try, it was not enough to stop the visitors writing their names into the record books.
