Club mascot selects his five favourite games

MASCOT Rookie the Ram has picked his five favourite games since he first emerged as a supporter of the club.

Having become detached from a flock across the A4, Rookie took shelter in the green kit container and after being sprinkled by water from the bore hole, began to watch the minis and juniors training and had his interest in rugby piqued.

After gaining the confidence to appear in public, he first watched Rams in action against Redruth and is now one of the most popular figures on matchdays!

Communicating through one of his handlers, Rookie looks back on his best matches.

Rams 28-10 Redruth (March 30, 2019)

“This was my first game so lives long in the memory!

“When I first got presented to the Ramily by (Chairman) Andy (Lynch) it was quite nerve-racking, but everyone made me feel so welcome which was really nice.

“I remember the guys started brilliantly and Miles Lloyd scored right at the start, so I guess from the start I really was a lucky mascot!”

“Niall Kidd went over and Alex Seers had his kicking boots on, so we were quite comfortably ahead at the break.

“Jamie Guttridge pretty much made the game safe and then Jak Rossiter scored an amazing length-of-the-pitch interception to seal the bonus-point – that was really cool!

“Redruth were gutsy and scored two late tries, but we were comfortable and set-up the chance to win the league the week after.”

Rams 25-21 Birmingham Moseley (September 14, 2019)

“This was an amazing game and a sign of some of the crackers we had last season!

“We made a brilliant start to our first-ever home game in National One and were 18-7 ahead at half-time thanks to an early try from Jamie Guttridge and another from Ollie Cole and Alex kicking a conversion and couple of penalties.

“Jak restored our big lead, but Birmingham fought back really strongly and it needed a fantastic defensive effort to ensure we kept up our perfect start to the season.”

Rams 27-21 Chinnor (September 28, 2019)

“This was just incredible – what a finish!

“Chinnor came over with a team full of ex-Premiership and Championship players and looked in control at half-time – they were 14-3 ahead.

“But we came flying out the blocks in the second half and Henry Bird scored a great try before Alex set-up Conor Corrigan with a beautiful chip to put us in front.

“However, they got another converted try and with five minutes to go I was worried I might see us lose for the first time.

“But the ending was just sensational. Firstly Robbie Stapley went over to cut the deficit to one point, and then Henry went over in the clubhouse corner to snatch a stunning win. It was an astonishing noise!”

Rams 27-20 Rosslyn Park (November 30, 2019)

“Another absolutely cracking game – I have been so lucky and am falling in love more and more with the sport!

“I’d actually seen us lose for the first time against Old Elthamians two weeks before, and we were in trouble early on as they went 14-0 ahead.

“But Tom Vooght got a try before half-time and (Director of Rugby) Seb (Reynolds) pulled off a masterstroke by picking two replacement props.

“Jack Steadman and Cam Zeiss had done really well for the first 50 minutes and then Niall Kidd and Turkey (Sean McDonnell-Roberts) came on and turned the screw even more.

“Niall got a try just before the hour-mark, but with three minutes remaining, we were still losing 20-13.

“But then we got a penalty try and what happened at the end was just memorable.

“Robbie turned down the chance for Drew (Humberstone) to kick a penalty and instead went for a scrum – and we pushed them back until the ref had to give another penalty try!

“The roar when it was awarded was even louder than after Chinnor and is probably my favourite moment so far!

Rams 17-22 Richmond (January 18, 2020)

“This was a bit of a disappointment, but it was also a special day because it was a top-of-the-table game with a real powerhouse team and it was the biggest crowd I’ve seen.

“They got an early try but we fought back really well thanks to Ollie Taylor and Jak scores, albeit Richmond got a second try to lead 12-10 at half-time.

“The to be fair to Richmond they used all their experience in the second half and deserved the win, although Tom Vooght snatched us a bonus-point right at the end – what is it about last-gasp tries at Old Bath Road!

“But again the lads were class and competed really well with a team who shouldn’t have been relegated the year before and who went onto be worthy champions – hopefully we get a chance to play them again in the future!”
