(18) JAK ROSSITER TRIES IN NATIONAL TWO TITLE-WINNING SEASON

Rich Ashton18 Dec 2020 - 16:19

Elusive wing looks back on a stunning campaign - and being pipped to the top scorer gong!

JAK Rossiter fondly recalls ‘an absolutely unbelievable season’ as he looks back to Rams’ National Two South title-winning campaign.

The elusive wing ran in 18 tries as his side topped the table with 28 wins from their 30 games, including eight tries in the first eight games as Rams made a flying start two years ago.

He admitted: “It was an absolutely unbelievable season – one of those where everything went right for us.

“It’s nice we’ve got the same group of boys here now and I think we took that momentum into last season and did as well as we did.

“I can’t take too much credit because there was a huge amount of work, and the way our forwards played put us on the front foot the whole time and the backs were so sharp they made it rather easy to score.”

He continued: “The same squad had been together for three or four seasons and we’d just built every year. The first year in National Two was mid-table, the year after that was sixth and we’d built a bit and the year after that was third.

“There were maybe one or two players coming in every year, but it was primarily the same guys going out on the pitch and I think that’s reflected in the fact more than half the team are either on or approaching 100 caps.

“I think it also helps we’ve always to some extent seen ourselves as the underdogs – the ‘rag tag boys from Berkshire’ – and we’ve really owned that and it’s given us a little chip on our shoulder so every time we run out on a Saturday we want to prove everyone wrong.”

One of the highlights of the season was the sensational, last-gasp 19-12 victory at Henley, when Jak scored twice in the final five minutes to snatch victory.

He revealed: “I’d say it’s in the top two or three games I’ve ever played in terms of the atmosphere from both our and their supporters. It was a packed out ground, played in such good spirits, and I’m really looking forward playing them this season.

“They were both finishing tries – Drew making the tackle and Ellis hacking on, and the second one was literally just a question of catching and falling over the line. It was an unbelievable team performance.”

The title was wrapped up with two games to spare with a 45-21 success at Clifton, and Jak came off the bench to add a further two tries to his tally.

He said: “That was a special day, again one of those where everyone played out of their skins and the majority of the work had been done for me after I came on in the second half. Everyone was just ecstatic at winning the league.”

While Jak crossed the whitewash 18 times, he remarkably was only the second top scorer, with his good mate Ben Henderson dotting down on 21 occasions.

And Jak joked: “I was a little bit bitter he beat me, as he’d have gone a maximum of 42 metres!

“The forwards were immense and to be fair, while there were a lot of driving maul tries he scored, there were some where he did a lot for himself, including that dreaded one against Dings. He’s a hell of a player.”

Having reminisced about that wonderful season, Jak is now looking forward to the National Cup – and confessed there is one game in particular with an extra spice to it.

And he revealed: “I can’t wait to play Henley again. There’s a great friendly rivalry there, we’ve got a lot of respect for them.

“Playing Chinnor is always fun and for me there’s a little bit of a personal one because my fiancé is the head physio at Esher, so that could be quite entertaining when we play them!
“I’m really looking forward to it and just getting back out on the field.”

And while 2020 has proved a difficult one in light of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Jak is one of the few to have won a trophy – becoming the inaugural Movember Cup champion as the Ramily raised more than £2,000 for charity last month.

He concluded: “It’s got to be top of my sporting achievements, although I thought Joe Bridger had me at the end.

“Stevie Bryant deserves a knighthood for his efforts. He did so much work with setting it up for the boys and the run he did, so huge, huge kudos to Scuba – he was class.”
