Record point-scorer crossed more than 15 years apart!

Name: Spike Chandler

Position: Fly-half/Full-back

Total Tries: 25

First Try: Corsham (h) – March 10, 2001.

Last Try: London Irish Wild Geese (h) – December 17, 2016.

Most tries in a game: (3) – Olney (March 23, 2002).

Most tries in a season: Seven in 2001/02.

Most tries against: (3) Marlow and Olney.

Summary:

Rams’ all-time top points-scorer first crossed the whitewash way back in March 2001, dotting down in a convincing 58-18 home win against Corsham before also scoring in the 2014 success at Bournemouth which concluded the Southern Counties South title-winning season.

While the side found life tougher in South West Two East, the 2001/02 campaign proved Spike’s most prolific in terms of tries, going over against Salisbury, Marlow (home and away), Slough and Olney, against whom he scored his sole career hat-trick during a 31-10 triumph.

After a four-year absence, Spike returned at the start of the 2006/07 season, and showed what the club had been missing with a further six tries. His first came in a 64-0 rout of Windsor, and he also scored a fortnight later in the 33-19 victory against High Wycombe.

Another try came in the 38-15 win at home to Aylesbury, one in a 13-10 reverse against Marlow, before he completed a seasonal double against High Wycombe in the 45-31 away success in the second game of 2007.

During a South West Two East title-winning season in which Rams won 19 of 22 games and Spike topped the points charts with a then-record 216, his last try came in a 28-5 win at home to Frome in early March.

In Rams’ first campaign in South West One, Spike grabbed tries against Maidenhead at home (38-5), Bracknell at home (27-32) and Maids again (15-12), and he went onto add another couple in 2008/09 against Clifton (24-40) and Cleve (39-23).

With Rams playing in National Three South West in 2009/10, Spike went over at Chippenham (41-24) and Coney Hill (16-27), and while he failed to dot down the following season, he still remained the top points-scorer for the fifth campaign in a row.

While his playing time reduced in the next couple of seasons, he showed he could still find the try line in 2013/14, finishing a 60-5 rout of Chippenham and also going over with a sensational length-of-the-field effort in the 28-6 home win against Old Centralians.

Amazingly, Spike grabbed one final try in the heady heights of National Two South – the fourth level he crossed in and more than 15 years after his first effort – when he made it No. 25 during the 39-24 victory at home to London Irish Wild Geese in the pre-Christmas game of December 2016.
