(20) NATIONAL ONE POINTS FOR KIERAN LEICESTER

(20) NATIONAL ONE POINTS FOR KIERAN LEICESTER

Rich Ashton20 Dec 2020 - 16:18

From ball-boy to the 1st XV!

KIERAN Leicester admits it is extra special for him to play in the 1st XV having previously been a ball boy as a Mini.

The utility back – capable of playing in the centre or in the back three – burst into the side towards the tail end of last year, going on to score tries against Sale, Plymouth Albion, Hull Ionians and Blackheath.

And it marks an impressive rise from when he first joined the club as an Under 7.

He admitted: “It really is amazing – it makes it that bit more special. Myself and Jamar (Richardson) who also still plays were down here ball-boying from when we were eight years old and we were in awe of the team, so to see it grow and now be a part of it is just incredible.

“My first try at Sale was gifted to me by Connor Hayhow – he broke through the line and I happened to be the one on his shoulder which was quite nice.

“The ones after that maybe had a little bit more individual flair.

“My favourite one was here against Plymouth when one of their guys kindly just fell off the tackle and let me run in.”

Looking back to last season, Kieran continued: “I was pretty nervous before my first game, but all the boys are on your side to look after you which is quite nice and quite helpful.

“I was trying not to overthink things and just focus on what I needed to do and the impact I wanted to have on the match.

“What sticks in my mind most of last season was hearing the noise at Old Bath Road – having been here for some 20 years, I’ve never heard the roars like that and to be on the pitch for that was just incredible.”

Despite training being put back on hold after Berkshire was plunged into Tier Four of lockdown measures, it is still hoped the National Cup will begin in February.

And Kieran is excited by the prospect, concluding: “It should be good – we’ve got a tough group with Chinnor and Rosslyn Park, but it will hopefully just be great to get out there and see what we can do and how we can adjust to the new laws.

“Hopefully we can make an impact and go as far as we can.”
