(23) YEARS SINCE INJURY STRUCK ROB DYER

(23) YEARS SINCE INJURY STRUCK ROB DYER

Rich Ashton23 Dec 2020 - 16:18

Titans manager still loving life at Old Bath Road!

TITANS manager Rob Dyer believes helping out behind the scenes is the next best thing to being out on the pitch.

It was 23 years ago that a broken shoulder led to the end of Rob’s playing career, but he remains a familiar face at Old Bath Road and helps things keep ticking along smoothly.

He said: “The best thing is just being able to help out, to be in amongst it with the Ramily, and for me, because I was forced to stop playing because of injury, it’s the nearest thing you can get to it.

“There is a lot to do – the worst thing is washing the kit, which is going to be even worse with the new white away shirt!

“We try and make it as much as possible like the 1st XV in terms of having all the kit laid out and everything in place, and other jobs are liaising with the league, recording the result after matches, chasing players – it’s ironic this year there would probably be less of that because of the size of the squad – getting people on the coach and making sure you don’t lose them after a game!”

With the Titans playing in the Zoo League, they face some fierce opposition and some hefty journeys, and Rob shared some of his favourite memories.

He continued: “There have been quite a few – with the Titans, the win at Jersey a couple of years ago stands out. With Rams, Friday night lights as Chinnor was brilliant to be at, especially when OT nicked the final line-out.

“Jersey is a great trip with flying over there, although even though the club put us up at Gatwick, we still had to be up at 5.30am for a 7.30am flight! Saying that, it might still be a shorter trip than somewhere like Darlington.

“I’ve only done Redruth once, but that was memorable as well.”

On the topic of his favourite players, he added: “Jez Flynn, Spike, Andy Amor – I was glad to say he still wants a few games for the Titans as I’d always want him in my team – Vooghty, Gutts from the current crop.”

Rob initially joined the club in 1982 and revealed how it has evolved.

He remarked: “It’s quite hard to explain because it was different, but there were just some signs of things changing. Back then it was definitely more a social vibe, people just wanting to play and spend time with their mates, but maybe not so keen on training.

“James Baker was also spot on when he said the clubhouse was a shack. There wasn’t even a physios room – it was like a wooden hut next to the main clubhouse. Things are definitely a bit smarter now.

“I’m quite surprised by the progress and also not – mainly because with Gary when he sets out a vision you just believe in it!”

With 2020 being a tough year for all, Rob is hoping for brighter times ahead, concluding: “For me it will just be great to see people playing, having the club busy and people seeing their mates.

“It’s been a rubbish year so it will just be great to see people enjoying themselves.”
