CHINNOR CLASHES NO. 8: RAMS 22-22 CHINNOR

Rich Ashton15 May 2021 - 15:30

Stapley stars as Rams hit back to earn a draw!

As we look back to finally returning to the field of play against our neighbours and National One rivals Chinnor, we will take a look back over some classic encounters before May 22.

8) Rams 22-22 Chinnor (April 2012)

In a late-season game which ultimately meant Rams missed out on a promotion play-off spot from National Three South West, the two rivals played out an absolute belter which ended with the spoils shared, albeit with Chinnor remaining ahead in the table with two matches to play.

The visitors went in front after 15 minutes when James Cathcart landed a penalty following Dom Gosling’s deliberate knock-on earned him a yellow card, but shortly after a catch-and-drive finished by the irrepressible Robbie Stapley made it 5-3 to Rams.

Chinnor went back in front at the start of the second quarter when Matt Goode’s grubber kick was collected by Pip Seymour to dot down, Cathcart adding the extras for a 10-5 advantage.

After Jevon Marsh was injured for the hosts, his replacement Guy Swadling landed a penalty, only for Cathcart to land two of his own to make it 16-8 at the interval.

Early in the second period Stapley grabbed his second try after picking up at the base of the scrum and brushing aside three would-be tacklers during a 15-metre charge, Swadling’s conversion cutting the deficit to a single point.

Cathcart landed his fourth penalty of the afternoon to extend the lead back to four points, but things looked good for Rams when Shaun Brown intercepted a pass and went the length-of-the-field for a memorable score converted by Swadling.

Yet the scores were again level on 63 minutes as Cathcart landed another penalty, taking his tally to 17 for the afternoon, and despite the best efforts of the Rams pack in particular, some marvellous Chinnor defence ensured they held on for a vital draw.

The List:

15) Chinnor 12-5 Rams (September, 2010)
14) Chinnor 22-10 Rams (September 2011)
13) Chinnor 16-10 Rams (January, 2017)
12) Rams 17-32 Chinnor (October, 2016)
11) Chinnor 36-14 Rams (September, 2017)
10) Rams 18-24 Chinnor (October, 2007)
9) Chinnor 8-6 (December, 2009)
