Summary:

Joao gave a clue as to what was to come with a couple of tries at the back end of the 2003/04 season, albeit both in losing causes against Trowbridge (5-20) and Ivel Barbarians (5-51).

It was from January 2006 the ‘Rio Rocket’ really made his mark, however, running in nine tries in 10 matches as Rams romped to the Southern Counties South title with 20 wins from 22 games.

He began with a sensational four-timer in the high-scoring 51-38 cracker at home to Stow-on-the-Wold, backing it up with another at Swindon the following week (22-17) and a sixth in four games in the dramatic 25-24 home success against Grove a fortnight later.

Further scores came against Slough when he bagged a brace in a 64-12 triumph, and another pair in the last game of the season at home to Buckingham (55-15).

Joao kick-started his most successful campaign with a against Henley Wanderers (39-15) as newly-promoted Gensians started life in South West Two East with a victory, and went on a hot streak later that month with scores against Swanage & Wareham (39-21), Windsor (64-0) and a brilliant hat-trick at Cheltenham (33-15).

After a blank the following week, Joao grabbed a double at Marlow (36-26), crossed at home to Salisbury (29-21) and bagged another brace against Aylesbury (38-15) to make it 10 tries in seven games.

He made it a seasonal double against Cheltenham (47-8) at Old Bath Road, and did the same against Swanage in a 32-10 triumph.

Tries 14 and 15 of a prolific campaign arrived in a dramatic 36-33 win at Swindon, and as Rams made it back-to-back titles, he also dotted down against Frome (28-5), Bournemouth (14-13) and Aylesbury (26-15) to finish as top try-scorer with 18.

While that proved to be the high point of his time at the club, he continued to score with a try against Maidenhead (38-5) in September 2007, and another five in the first five games of the 2008/09 season against Cleve (42-15), Chippenham (45-24), Oxford Harlequins (55-7), Exmouth (24-19) and Weston-super-Mare (26-18).

Almost two years later Joao returned to the scoresheet against WSM in a 19-7 home win, while his last three tries arrived in the 2011/12 campaign – at home to Bridgwater & Albion (38-15), Oxford Harlequins (33-10) and Exmouth (31-23).

Quite incredibly, this meant his last 37 tries for the club all came in winning efforts – after his maiden two were in defeat!
