CHINNOR CLASHES - NO. 1: CHINNOR 17-21 RAMS

Rich Ashton22 May 2021 - 07:25

Taylor's last-gasp steal secures Friday night delight!

As we look back to finally returning to the field of play against our neighbours and National One rivals Chinnor, we will take a look back over some classic encounters before May 22.

1) Chinnor 17-21 Rams (January 2020)

Ollie Taylor’s famous last-minute line-out steal helped Rams hold off a ferocious Chinnor fightback and secure victory in their maiden Friday night lights encounter.

The home side took a seventh-minute lead courtesy of a Laurence May penalty, but Rams were the first side to cross the whitewash when Ben Henderson powered over from close range following a period of sustained pressure.

Will Partington added the extras to make it 7-3 to the visitors, and they moved further ahead when the full back was again on target after Tom Vooght dotted down.

Rams went 18 points in front when Vooght crossed for a second time, Partington again on target, but they were then subjected to a ferocious onslaught which saw May convert tries from Jason Worrall and James Tyas.

With their promotion dreams all but on the line in the final stages, Chinnor won a penalty which they kicked to the corner, only for the outstanding Taylor to snaffle the line-out and allow Rams to clear the ball and seal a dramatic success.

After the game, Director of Rugby, Seb Reynolds, said: “I think both sides put on a show for all the supporters who came out and watched the game.

"In fairness it was Chinnor’s idea, and we went with it because we thought it was a great chance for people to come out on a Friday night and watch National One rugby – I think it’s some of the best rugby you’ll see in the country played by guys from their home towns.

“A lot of the chat (in the build-up) was about the battle of the scrums, but we wanted to play some rugby and change the point of attack and some of our tempo in the first half was brilliant.

“We were playing some really brave rugby and attacking from our own line so we’re not just a scrummage team, we can do other things now and again.”

He continued: “Credit to Chinnor, the way they came back was fantastic and some of their attacking play was very, very good. But our guys just don’t stop.

“Good players and good teams will come back and we always knew if we got in front they would come back at us.

“At this level if you just drop off for a second and open the door for the opposition they’ll get back in the game rather than just coming back at you for five minutes, and Chinnor did that.

“Their ambitious season was on the line and they came back at us hard, but our guys just dug in.

“We’ve got a really special group of players who just do not stop fighting. They just will not stop for each other and they just keep going and huge credit to Ollie Taylor at the end to steal the line-out and secure the game for the lads.”
