Summary:

Having made his debut as a 17-year-old alongside Craig Nightingale the season before, James grabbed his first try on the opening day of the 2005/06 season, helping turnaround a 10-0 half-time deficit to defeat hosts Olney 34-17.

James also went over in the 64-12 thrashing of Slough as Gensians won Southern Counties North, and he crossed against Windsor (64-0) and Swanage & Wareham (32-10) the following year as they made it back-to-back titles by scooping the South West Two East silverware.

He went over in the 20-15 home derby defeat to Reading in December 2007, with his next try coming in Rams’ maiden National Three South West campaign in 2009/10 – Chinnor the visitors who were edged out 23-20.

Another score came in the 62-8 thrashing of Maidenhead, but it was the following season when James found a real fondness for the try-line, going over on six occasions.

He firstly dotted down in the 22-10 loss at Chinnor, then secured a key score in the narrow 24-22 home win against Oxford Harlequins and added a third at Cleve (42-15).

He made it back-to-back tries the following week at home to Coney Hill (38-14), and completed a seasonal double against Quins (42-17) before again making it two in two games at Cheltenham (22-34).

James crossed twice in 2011/12 as Rams claimed a creditable third-place finish, scoring against Bournemouth (22-18) and Bridgwater & Albion (85-0).

His most prolific try-scoring campaign came the year after, starting in the 62-0 thrashing of Maidenhead and following with scores against Malvern (22-15) and Old Patesians (25-32) to make it three in four games.

He dotted down in both games either side of Christmas against Barnstaple (24-7) and Brixham (36-21), and finished the season with three tries in the final four games – against Oxford Harlequins (44-7), Weston-super-Mare (5-26) and Avonmouth Old Boys (41-14).

James’ next try came in the 26-13 win at Worcester Wanderers in November 2013, with another coming in the next game against WSM (25-21).

He grabbed the opener in the 28-6 home win against Old Centralians, also dotted down in the 33-22 triumph at Old Pats and made it five for the season in the 22-10 home success against Amersham & Chiltern.

Perhaps James’ most famous try came when he dashed 95 metres with an interception in the 29-24 reverse at Newton Abbot, and while he scored in the promotion play-off against Old Elthamians, Rams were sadly beaten 17-10.

However, they responded by finally winning the National Three South West title the following season, James contributing three tries against Hornets (35-0), Old Cents (22-17) and Quins again (65-5).

Moving into National Two South, he again chipped in with three tries in Rams’ first campaign at Level Four, going over against Bury St Edmunds (32-18), Bishop’s Stortford (15-27) and Worthing (20-22).

James next two tries came against Clifton, in the 41-26 home win of April 2017, and then in the 43-16 victory of December that year.

His other try in the 2017/18 was in the 31-15 success against Taunton at Old Bath Road.

The tight-head prop bagged four tries in the 2018/29 title-winning campaign, beginning in the 43-13 victory against Henley, and also including scores against Barnes (26-19), Worthing (41-12) and Clifton (26-19).

While the maiden season in National One was halted prematurely, James found time to cross the whitewash twice, efforts against Blackheath away (17-22) and Cinderford (29-7) taking his league tally to 45.
